Innovating Inspections to Value Innovative Schools

The seminar on Innovating Inspections to value innovative Schools was held by the Portuguese Inspectorate of Education and Science (IGEC) on the 13 th and 14 th September 2012, in Porto (Oporto), Portugal. In the section Activities/Workshops you will find information about programme, participants and presentations and some photos taken by Portuguese colleagues during the workshop.

With this workshop we aim at approaching the ‘innovation in education’ theme with a focus on the way the European Inspectorates of Education deal with innovation when it happens either at a meso level (the school) or at a micro level (the classroom itself).

Schools and other education departments blame Inspectorates and the inspectors for being much focused on the accomplishment of norms, putting aside (or even criticizing) many of the creative and innovative school practices, even when there is evidence showing that they achieve good results. So far, this has been the way that many stakeholders figure out our job.

In the workshop we intend to find, share and discuss examples of innovative Inspectorates and inspections among SICI members that may be inspiring and work as levers to inspectors’ work.
